Torrential rain prevented the Audi drivers from improving their positions during the rain-interrupted qualifying sessions for the Kyalami 9 Hour, the third and final round of the 2021 Intercontinental GT Challenge. Audi Sport customer racing enters the 2022 motorsport season with a mix of established drivers and promising young drivers – including three new signings. The driver squad comprises a total of 16 talents. They are joined by three-time DTM champion René Rast and former DTM vice-champion Nico Müller. The two drivers will strengthen the brand’s customer racing program this year again.
Audi Sport customer racing travels to the finale of the Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC) with the best chances. In the only worldwide race series for GT3 sports cars, Audi leads the manufacturers standings with a 36-point advantage. In the drivers standings, three Audi Sport drivers share second place and two others are third in the standings. Quadruple championship success in the ADAC GT Masters: At the season finale at the Nürburgring, Audi Sport driver Christopher Mies and his teammate Ricardo Feller secured the title in the drivers’ classification. Their team Montaplast by Land-Motorsport won the ADAC GT Masters Team classification. Ricardo Feller was also delighted with the title in the Junior classification. Audi Sport customer racing clinched its first victory of the season in the Intercontinental GT Challenge together with Audi Sport Team Saintéloc in the USA. The hard-fought victory at the Indianapolis 8 Hours was already the third overall success of the Audi R8 LMS in an international endurance race in North America since 2017. Numerous incidents, penalties and caution phases characterized a competition in which the three Audi Sport teams were not spared either.
Audi Sport customer teams Saintéloc Racing and Team WRT had every reason to celebrate at the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup in Valencia. The French Saintéloc Racing team clinched second place in the first of the two races, while the Belgian Team WRT squad secured another early overall title for the 2021 season in Spain. Audi privateers enjoyed successes with the Audi RS 3 LMS, claiming podium results in four countries.
The latest GT World Challenge Europe weekend saw more celebration for Team WRT as Charles Weerts and Dries Vanthoor clinched another early title. The Audi R8 LMS proved to be the car to beat in Italy and China, while the latest evolution version of the GT3 sports car made its debut in Spain. Audi Sport customers also enjoyed success with the Audi R8 LMS GT4 clinching titles in the GT4 European Series.
The second generation Audi RS 3 LMS is ready for customers: Comtoyou Team Audi Sport clinched its first victory with Audi Sport driver Frédéric Vervisch in the test and development season in July and its second victory with privateer junior driver Gilles Magnus in the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup in August. Now teams from all over the world can place their orders for the RS 3 LMS gen II. The brand sold a total of 180 units of the predecessor between 2016 and 2021 in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Audi Sport customer racing has not produced any other race car in such a high number within one model generation.
Charles Weerts and Dries Vanthoor in the Audi R8 LMS have already been crowned Sprint Champions of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS before the finale. Three victories were celebrated by teams with the Audi R8 LMS in Europe at the ADAC Racing Weekend and one in the USA at GT America.
