The Audi RS 5 DTM is the car to beat also in the 2020 DTM. At the season opener at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Audi swept the top five positions in the second race on Sunday as it had done the day before. Defending champion René Rast narrowly won a thrilling duel with Saturday’s winner Nico Müller. The podium on Sunday was completed by Robin Frijns. Audi has not ruled out staying in the DTM in some capacity beyond the end of the 2020 season, despite announcing its exit from the series in April.
Since the news was made official, the ITR has gone into overdrive to secure the future of the DTM, and it is understood that series chief Gerhard Berger has shortlisted upgraded GT3 cars and LMDh machines to replace the Class One platform.
Should the DTM move to GT3 cars, Audi could potentially continue in the series with the R8 LMS that is currently used in a variety of sportscar championships worldwide. Read more
Eagle-eyed observers had spotted certain DTM cars carrying oversized rear wings at last month’s pre-season test at the Nurburgring. While it initially appeared that manufacturers were trialing new aerodynamic aids during testing, it has since emerged that those large overhanging structures are actually there for safety reasons. Audi driver Rene Rast topped the final day of DTM pre-season testing at the Nurburgring on Thursday.
Audi Sport boss Dieter Gass has revealed that the DTM has abolished team orders for 2020.
Gass said that the decision has come after a “fundamental discussion” last year on the advisory board – including DTM and BMW – of DTM organiser the ITR. Read more
